The hobbit - 320 page book. 8 hour 52 minute movie trilogy
The Lord of the Ring - 3 books, 1600 pages. 11 hour 21 minute movie trilogy
Minutes of movie per page
The Hobbit - 1.66 (1.2 including “ The Appendecies”)
LOTR - .46 (not including “The Appendecies”)
Meaning if you were a fast reader, you could READ The Hobbit in less time than it would take you to watch the movies. You would also feel significantly more satisfied afterwards.

The Hobbit movie is a travesty. They should have said that the story was inspired by Tolkien, not actually by him. He would likely disown it were he alive. I get that they wanted to make it more of a prequel to LOTR by dragging in all the stuff about Sauron returning to Mordor, but it made the whole thing a mess, and the blatant disregard for the actual story was appalling.
All that being said, The Hobbit book is a rather tedious affair, and a particularly slow read. Perhaps Rankin Bass did it the most justice when they condensed the whole thing down into a 90-minute cartoon. After all, Tolkien intended it to be a story for children.

It’s probably been 40 years since I’ve seen that. But I remember that song vividly.

I know how this happened (I’ve seen the director/cast commentary), but I still don’t understand how this happened. They had so many of the right ingredients. It should have been on the same level as the LotR movies.

Basically, I think they tried to make an action movie out of a children’s story. It’s just ridiculously over the top. I watched the barrel scene the other day and just laughed at how bad and overwrought it is. And CG Legolas just looked awful.
